One Day in Bintan, Like Traveling With Family
Some journeys end when you arrive back home.
Others stay with you long after the journey is over.
This was one of those journeys.
I had the pleasure of spending a full day in Bintan with Abang Rosli and his family, showing them some of the places that make Bintan Island so special.
We began our adventure at the Bintan Desert and Blue Lake.
Surrounded by golden sand and the calm blue waters of the lake, we took our time exploring, taking photos, laughing, and simply enjoying the moment. There was no need to rush. The day had only just begun.
From there, we continued to Kelong Rindu Selalu, where we sat together over a delicious seafood lunch.
With the sea stretching around us and the gentle atmosphere of a traditional kelong, lunch became more than just a meal. It was another opportunity to talk, share stories, and enjoy being together.
Then came another side of Bintan.
We ventured into the mangrove forest, traveling quietly through the waterways surrounded by lush green mangrove trees.
For a moment, everything felt slower.
The noise of everyday life seemed far away, replaced by the sound of the water and the peaceful rhythm of the forest.
Later that afternoon, we headed toward Trikora Beach.
The sea breeze, the open shoreline, and the sound of the waves gave us the perfect place to enjoy the final part of our day together.
But looking back, the places were not what made this journey so memorable.
It was the people.
Somewhere along the way, something unexpectedly special happened.
For Abang Rosli's wife, I no longer felt like simply the person taking their family around Bintan.
She treated me almost like her own son.
And somehow, I felt the same way.
As I drove them from one destination to another, it felt less like I was taking guests on a Bintan tour and more like I was taking my own parents out for a day of exploring the island.
There were small conversations.
Simple jokes.
Little moments of care.
And a warmth that was never planned.
Then, eventually, the day came to an end.
I drove them back to Tanjung Uban Port, where they would continue their journey through Batam before returning to Malaysia.
Saying goodbye felt heavier than I expected.
After spending the entire day together, there was a quiet sense of sadness as we stood there knowing that our little Bintan adventure had come to an end.
But the story did not quite end at the port.
Later that evening, they sent me a message to let me know that they had safely arrived at their destination.
It was such a simple gesture.
But to me, it meant so much.
It felt like the kind of message a family member would send after a long journey—just to let you know, “We made it home safely.”
And in that moment, I realized again that this had become more than just a one-day tour in Bintan.
We had only spent one day together.
But sometimes, one day is enough to create a memory that stays for a very long time.
That day reminded me that being a tour guide is not always about showing people beautiful places.
Sometimes, it is about sharing a little part of your home with people who arrive as guests...
and leave feeling like family.
Thank you, Abang Rosli and family, for making this Bintan day trip so meaningful.
I truly hope our paths cross again someday, in another journey, another place, or perhaps back here in Bintan.
Until then, take care and travel safely.
Bintan may have been where our journey took place.
But the warmth we shared is what I will remember.
